A Musician Who Listens

Long time musician Stephen Doster answered which five concerts/performances he has attended in the past that moved him for the musical ability and skill of the artist and band.

Artist: Jimi Hendix
Venue: Hemisphere Arena, San, Antonio, Texas
Year: 1969
He was for another planet just passing through.

Artist: Blind Faith
Venue: Hemisphere Arena- San Antonio, Texas
Year: 1969
I was a big Traffic and Cream fan and this night was memorable because I was almost thrown out by a big Texas cop and saved by someone with the band who put me on stage. They were billed a 'super-group' and it still sounds about right. I think if Steve Winwood sang the telephone directory I'd be yelling for an encore.

Artist: Neil Young
Venue: The Rainbow Theatre- London
Year: 1973
After putting out Harvest, the biggest selling record of any artist in 1972. Neil came on stage and started sing "Tonight's the Night" and proceeded to play only the songs that would make up that 1975 release. It was dark and harrowing, with him doing stand up comedy in between and lots of tequila shots. I'd never seen an artist just not at all concerned about being liked. It was performance art. It was art.

Artist: Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne
Venue: The Jahrhundert Halle- Frankfurt, Germany
Year: 1972
Jackson Browne had just released his debut record and did a fine job opening the show. Joni took the stage and I was spellbound from the first note to the last. She to me is a great innovator without peers in my book. A genius? Yes, absolutely.

Artist: Pretenders
Venue: Armadillo World Headquarters
Year: 1980
They came out of the gate blistering with their debut album. This was the first time I saw them live, so it was the first time I saw James Honeyman-Scott. He would go on to be my mentor and the person who taught me how to arrange and produce songs. He passed away while producing me, but not before changing my life.
